Marketing "happiness" can build your business By Roy Osing

Happiness has significant implications for marketing to be more effective in contributing to the growth challenges of any organization.

Most businesses today flog their products and services at customers.

They copy best in class companies which inevitable results in no differentiation from the herd

The practice of picking “best in class” and trying to copy what they do (a “best practice”) in hopes that whatever benefits they realize will fall to you is a ...

They are supply oriented with a focus on moving what they produce to market.

Success and survival, in the long term, however, demands that we create value for customers that is both relevant and unique.

And we need to think about EXPERIENCES as the way to do it.

An in-depth study at Cornell University found that experiences bring greater happiness and satisfaction than buying and owning possessions.

posted by Dawn F on April 5, 2010. I wonder if the average American consumer will ever “get” this idea – you don’t need stuff, people! Happy memories and ...

Deepak Chopra agrees. At a conference in Vancouver he argued that experiences deliver happiness in three ways:

1. Planning an experience creates anticipation and excitement.
2. Participating in the experience creates in-the-moment euphoria.
3. Remembering the experience creates lasting memories.

Tony Hseih, CEO of Zappos in his first book Delivering Happiness, discusses "how using happiness as a framework can produce profits, passion and purpose in both business and life".

Happiness has a political dimension as well. The small nation of Bhutan has made"Gross National Happiness"the central aim of its domestic policy.

And in The Politics of Happiness, former Harvard president Derek Bok examines how governments could use happiness research in a variety of policy areas to increase well-being and improve the quality of life for all their citizens.

If countries are trying to understand how happiness can improve the quality of life for its citizens, why wouldn't businesses try to understand how happiness can improve relationships with their customers?

It makes sense. Happy customers are likely to remain loyal until their supplier does something to annoy them and force them to leave.

Moreover Happy customers are very likely to be, what Seth Godin calls in his book The Purple Cow, "sneezers", extremely vocal and passionate advocates of the organization.

The bottom line is that happiness has the potential to be an awesome business builder.

But organizations need to tap into it.

Why do most businesses ignore happiness-through-experiences as the driver of their marketing efforts?

Why do they instead continue the traditional practice of pushing products at us?

Answer:

 1. They don't understand the power of the happiness-through-experience strategy over a product-push one.

 2. They've always been product focused; that's the methodology that is taught in school.

 3. Its easier to continue doing what they're doing. To change is tough. It requires a significant effort and it's risky.

 4. The design of happiness experiences is complicated in terms of the customer research required and in integrating product elements to produce a seamless value proposition.

Leaders need to direct their marketing people to get off the product train and get on the happiness train.

Youngsters from Malir District displayed their efforts by implementing various social action projects in their community. Around 120 young participants from Saudabad and Model Colony were enrolled in the six months training program called ‘Lead the Way’.  These participants not only got training for their projects from the program officers at iACT, but also implemented them in their communities, schools, collegesand hospitals.
The projects included Anti-Smoking and Anti-Drug Campaign, Women’s Right in Pakistan, Cleaning Campaign, Awareness about child labour, Awareness about Traffic Rules, Education Walk, Library Conception, Motivational Sessions, Renovating Learning Spaces, Tree Plantation and others.

Ms. Shamim Mumtaz - Minister Social Welfare Department, Rizwan Jaffar - Founder Chairman Youth Parliament, Mr. Feroz Khan – CEO Omar Jibran Engineering Industries Ltd. and principals of the schools attended the event.
The reason behind organizing the ceremony was to show the efforts of participants and also to encourage them. It is heartening to know that the students are eager to carry on with this community rehabilitation work on their own as well.
The motive behind instigating the projects was to provide an opportunity for vulnerable youth to fight against terrorism and extremism. It is not only terrorism that has affected Pakistan, but several of its by-products are also threatening the peace of our society.

To overcome the increasing intolerance and violence, Habib University Foundation took a step forward and embarked on a six month project exercise of engaging youth from various areas of Malir in constructive activities and they get positive results for their efforts.

The Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) is a not-for-profit career development center that offers training to underprivileged youth from marginalized areas of Karachi for better career prospects. Established in 2008, in Saudabad, Malir, it is a public-private partnership initiative between Habib University Foundation and local government of Karachi. iACT offers free of cost, as well as scholarship based courses and trainings. iACT also guarantees 100% job placement to its graduates.

Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents has taken up the cause of engaging and empowering young people from marginalized areas as its mission and aims to help youth from areas stricken with poverty, violence, and crime. We bring young people from areas like Lyari, Korangi, Landhi, Malir, and other parts of Karachi along with the youth of other Sindh Districts to iACT to enhance their abilities and strengthen their relations with community.  For this purpose, iACT is investing financial and human resources in the development and implementation of youth development projects of Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sindh in seven districts of Sindh. Not only the courses we make our students go through a rigorous training which involves personal and career development, industrial visits, guest speaker sessions and counseling to enrich them with practical experiences. We also take the responsibility to place our students in the industry and provide them suitable jobs.

Wafa Ka Mausam has all the ingredients to attract viewers

Television in Pakistan has a legacy of producing high quality drama that attracts viewers. For decades Pakistan television was the sole torch bearer of drama in country and in that duration they produced many memorable dramas to entertain viewers.

At the turn of century, as government changed policies, many private channels also entered the fray to increase the options for viewers who gleefully accepted all these new entrants.

TVONE is one of the private channels operating in Pakistan and with their entertaining dramas; they are making a concentrated effort to stand out in this clutter of entertainment channels.

TV ONE have recently produced some successful serials such as Main Sitara Mann Piyas, Dil-e-Majboor,Seeta Bagri and Munkir.

Carrying forward their trend of producing intriguing serials, the channel is now coming up with another enthralling production titled ‘Wafa ka Mausam.’

Starring Aijaz Aslam, Neelum Munir, Shafqat Cheema, Haya Sehgal, Noman Habib,Bahar Begum and others, this serial has all the ingredients to attract large number of viewers around Pakistan.

Written by Riffat Siraj and skillfully directed by Babar Qayyum, Wafa Ka Mausam in a sedate manner try to touch few social issues such as child labour, women empowerment and age barriers in marriage.
Neelam Munir with Aijaz Aslam
Wafa Ka Mausam is an intense story of love and ego. Everyone claims about their love for the loved ones but when sacrifice required to prove that love, ego stops them. This is what happened with Hammad (Shafqat Cheema) who played the role of Komal’s (Neelam Munir) father and also with Dara played by Aijaz Aslam.

When Komal, the daughter of a wealthy landlord Hammad falls in love with Dara a college teacher, her father is infuriated. He claims to love Komal but was not willing to sacrifice his ego and false family values.

Dara also loves Komal but he pulled back after Hammad insulted him on his weak family background.
Aijaz Aslam talking about his role in Wafa Ka Mausam

In this clash of egos between Hammad and Dara, Komal is faced by a dilemma of where to go and whom to choose.

Bazil (Noman Habib) is Komal’s younger cousin who is also in love with her but is willing to give sacrifice may have solution for Komal’s problems.

Wafa Ka Mausam is shot in Punjab and also in the northern areas and it tried to highlight the problems women faced due to strict cultural and family values in rural areas of Punjab.
Neelam Munir and Aijaz Aslam watching the promo of Wafa Ka Mausam

All aspects of Wafa Ka Mausam are interesting but I think writer should be better served if she had shown Dara as a neighbor or friend of Komal and not her teacher. Relationship between teacher and student is sacred and I think we should leave it like this for the time being and not pollute it.

Neelum Munir and Aijaz Aslam are upbeat about their respective roles in Wafa Ka Mausam. They are positive that viewers will like their performance this serial and find it a lot different from the serial on air these days on other entertainment channels.

Quratul Ain sung the melodious OST of Wafa Ka Mausam which was directed Waqar Ali.

Wafa Ka Mausam will be on air every Wednesday at 8:00pm. The first episode of this serial which was aired on 22nd February was generously applauded by viewers and team involved with this drama are optimistic to get high level of viewer’s’ appreciation throughout the 25 episodes of this serial.

How to not have all your eggs in one basket - a primer on revenue diversity By Roy Osing

$
0
0
“It’s not good to have all your eggs in one basket” is a saying that speaks well to the business risk of relying on too few assets for a disproportionate amount of your income.

Too much from too few leaves you vulnerable to the negative effects of unexpected economic and competitive events.

Five steps will help you develop valuable diversity.

1) Target customers where your wallet share is lowThese are customers whose spending on your service or product comprises a low percentage of their overall spending in your particular business sector.

It’s your share of your target customer’s total business that’s the relevant metric, not your share of a mass market….

2) Sell current product applications provided to your most popular customer groups to other customers who don’t currently use your products in the same way.
Use existing marketing materials in the sales process to maximize return on investment.

3) Develop new applications for your current products based on the wants and desires of your high-value customers.
New application success depends on the clarity and “intimacy” of the customer requirements you identify. Emphasize the value derived from your products, not the technology used to deliver it.

4) If you are tempted to pursue new customers for your products, employ the “fast and easy” approach . Identify those who have good revenue potential and are easy to pitch to and quick to buy. Business risk is increased by going after new customers who pose difficulty and consume too many of your resources as you try to sell to them.

Traditional strategic planning methodology is all screwed up. First, it is woefully inadequate in terms of creating unique competitive advantage. The tools to define ...

5) For the longer term, develop new products to satisfy unmet customer demand.
This usually involves new technologies that are more difficult to adopt and take longer to assimilate.

But don’t be too diverse.

Provide what your customers care about, and be the sole provider

Users will no longer have to dig out their old handsets to get their nostalgia fix, instead HMD Global invites the world to unite through the free game and challenge friends to play, using Facebook’s Instant Games platform.
In keeping with the original game, players will move the snake around the screen, eating apples and bugs along the way to score points. The more the snake eats, the longer it grows, making it more challenging to control. There are six levels to enjoy, each with a different layout and snake skin. Gamers can choose from three speeds; the higher the speed, the higher the score. In addition, friends either one-on-one, or as a group can see who has the highest score on the leaderboard adding an element of friendly competition.

Pekka Rantala, Chief Marketing Officer of HMD Global said: ‘The Snake game was the most popular game in the history of Nokia phones, in fact the true origin of mobile gaming can be traced back to a Nokia handset released in 1997. To this day it has remained hugely popular, not only because it carries a strong sense of nostalgia but because this was the first ever mobile gaming experience for many consumers. The opportunity to partner with Facebook, the social media platform that has single handedly defined the social media landscape, is an incredible opportunity. We were truly excited to work with them to bring back Snake in a modern format to a global audience. We hope in its new format it unites people across the world and brings as much joy to players as it did the first time around.’
Laurens Rutten, Founder and CEO of CoolGames, the developers of Snake on Instant Games, said: ‘It was a big honour that our Studio could contribute to a new release of such an iconic IP that has shaped the mobile games industry.’

A revamped version of Snake will also be pre-installed on the new Nokia 3310, a head turning modern twist on one of the best-selling phones of all time, making the Snake comeback even more exiciting.

Tourists’ attractions of the 2nd most beautiful Capital in the world By Khurram Zia Khan

Islamabad has been recognized as the second most beautiful capital in the world; following right behind London and anyone who’s gotten a chance to visit this scenic city will admit that the title’s been justly awarded. Everything about Islamabad is calming, pleasing and seemingly picture perfect. Be it the weather, scenery, mountains, or even the infrastructure. The city has an element of coherence that allows all the elements of nature to flow together and contribute in creating a masterpiece.

This particular post does not discuss the glories of Islamabad and all its wonders but rather sheds light on the complete experience and what you need to capture when you’re visiting this city.

Faisal Masjid

You’ve undoubtedly seen many pictures of the very beautiful Faisal Masjid that’s artistically shaped as a desert Bedouins tent. But don’t be fooled, no picture (including the one posted below) can remotely capture the actual grandeur of this masjid – It has a majestically captivating aura in a lusciously green environment.
Just standing in the garden below it and viewing the monumental size of the Masjid is an enthralling experience. The grand structure makes you feel so very small and the view above is mesmerizingly beautiful, to say the least - The rising Margalla Hills forming the background of the white marbled Masjid add a whole new appeal to the rising structure.

‘Daman-e-Koh’ translates into the forefoot of the Mountain

It’s a small park located on the thrilling ride up the Margalla Hills. Daman-e-Koh also has a rough trekking path that leads up to the mountains and is surrounded by scattered forestry. The park itself has plenty of local stalls selling gifts and souvenirs along with great food! Enjoy your afternoon tea here alongside a spicy plate of pakoras. Say Hi to the monkeys that’ll be wandering nearby, and don’t hesitate to throw some fries their way – They’re very friendly!

The single most recommended restaurant in all of Islamabad would have to be Monal and while the food of this place may not be too exciting, the view is breathtaking! This restaurant is literally located on top of a mountain. If you sit outside and get a seat in the corner you can see all of Islamabad right below your eyes.

If you come to Islamabad you absolutely must capture this view.

The ride up to the restaurant will take you approximately 45 min. Try to book a table at sunset to see the sky shifts colors with seamless grace.

Pakistan Monument

The Pakistan Monument is a uniquely constructed structure with historic significance. Be sure to click a picture here as well before you leave.

From a broad perspective, Islamabad is a relatively small city and doesn’t have a long list of attractions attributed to its name. But the single most admirable feature of Islamabad is its long drives. The city has a certain sense of calm and quiet. It’s undisturbed by chaotic city life and has somehow managed to bridge the divide between modern developments and scenic serenity, and that’s what sets it apart. The best way to view this difference in lifestyle and environment is to go on a long drive across the city and feel it firsthand.

Topo-guided Lasik, a safe and reliable procedure to get rid of eye wear By Khurram Zia Khan

Pakistan is a country where unfortunately we pass stringent remarks on the physical appearance and dressing of our friends and other people without realizing the fact that these remarks can be painful for the person whom we are targeting. Matters get worse when people search for bride for their brothers and sisters and unfortunately reject a girl on wearing glasses without taking into account the fact that they are rejecting a person not for any of her fault but on something that is not in her control.
Dr. Sharif Hashmani and his team performed first ever Topo- guided Lasik procedure in Pakistan

It will be very difficult to break free from the wrong notions prevailing in our society but we can change ourselves by using advanced medical solutions to permanently get rid of our deficiencies.

Live LASIK Surgery for the first time in Pakistan is performed at Hashamanis hospital

Topo- guided Lasik is the most recent advanced procedure that can help person live his/her life without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK laser eye surgery was developed more than 20 years ago, and more than 40 million eyes have been treated worldwide. Hashmanis Hospital brought this technology to Pakistan in 2004 and to date they have successfully treated over 50,000 eyes.

Currently, Hashmanis Hospitals is equipped with 3 Lasik machines.

Hashmanis hospital is different from other hospitals because of its high technology equipment, presence of experienced doctor who follow their ethics strictly. At Hasmanis hospital, it is mandatory to carry out pre-operation eye test and if the patient’s eye is not fit for operation, they decline to carry out his/her procedure. On average, Hashmanis decline to carry out procedure of over 30% patients and this is the highest decline ration in Pakistan.

Hashmanis hospital is making a conscious effort to keep itself abreast with the modern technologies so that they can always provide latest treatment to their patients. As part of their commitment to provide latest treatment, Hashmanis recently introduced Topo Guided “Contoura_ Vision LASIK”” for the first time in Pakistan. At the moment, Hashmanis is the only facility to offer this procedure in Pakistan.

In Topo Guided Guided Contours-Vision LASIK ,the built In diagnostic technology is able to meticulously identify and record irregularities in the cornea’s curvature as well as its optics. During LASIK, this information is combined with the patient’s corrective eyewear prescription to dramatically improve vision for those suffering from nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism

I saw this procedure myself when it was performed by Dr. Sharif Hashmani on one of his patient. It is a simple and quick procedure that takes 10 to 15 minutes on each eye. Patient’s eye was anesthesized and her head was positioned under the laser. A corneal flap is created through laser and laser is applied on the target corneal tissue that is the reason of eye defect and the flap is restored.

Dr. Sharif masterly carried out the procedure which was completed smoothly and minutes after the surgery patient was normal and out of the operation theatre. Best part of this procedure is that it is an outpatient treatment and patient can go home immediately after completion of procedure

92.6% people can see 6/6 or better, normal vision while 98.4% are of the view that due comfort and accuracy they would have procedure again if required.

Topo Guided Guided Contours-Vision LASIK is customized to condition of eyes, gives sharp and crisp vision, provides greater reading ability, improves light tolerance, is safer and is a definitive way to improve quality of life.

Dr. Sharif Hashmani introduced this procedure in Pakistan because he wanted more and more people to live an improved life and can see more clearly without any corrective eye wear.

Dr. Sharif Hashmani has been serving Pakistan for the last 30 years by practicing medicine in the field of eye surgery. What started as his small step to contribute towards the prosperity of Pakistan, has now resulted in an ever achieving mission under the name of Hashmanis.

Established in the year 1981, Hashmanis has successfully developed itself one of the most reputed names in the field of eye care. Launched as an institution keen to integrate the latest advancements in the field of eye care, Hashmanis is credited to introduce IOL in Pakistan in the year 1982 and then later introducing Phacoemulsification in the year 1995. Through Phacoemulsification, it was able to remove Cataract through small incisions without the need of any stitches.

Leaders must micromanage this... By Roy Osing

$

0
I know, leaders are supposed to set the tone and direction for the organization and then let people drive to deliver the results expected.

A leader who micromanages is often scorned and encouraged to “get out of the kitchen” and let the workers do their thing.

Although I generally agree with this mantra, there is one huge exception that demands leadership hands-on involvement – the “customer moment.”

This stuff should never be delegated.

The customer moment is that special instant when your most precious asset “touches” your organization. The moment of truth when things will either go brilliantly or horribly wrong

The moment when, based on the outcome, your customer will either decide to continue doing business with you or leave and scream to everyone around them about how terrible you are.

This moment requires an active deep-dive by the leader to ensure that the customer is dazzled, smitten, wowed, blown away and left breathless.

It requires the leader’s fingerprints.

Here are 10 things a leader should do to micromanage the customer moment:

1. Tell your organization what you are up to and why it is so critically important to have blazing moments with your customers.

Make sure everyone understands why you are “getting into the engine room” and getting your hands dirty. It’s not a trust issue; it’s a strategic one.

2. Declare what you expect every moment to “look like” – the key behaviours and outcome you expect.

3. Monitor moments. Open up your calendar to get to the front line and witness how moments are being handled.

4. Provide real-time feedback and coaching to your people engaging with moments.

5.Show them how it’s done. Engage in some moments yourself  and with your employees and give them a picture of what you expect a moment to look like for the customer.

     Are you an opportunity spotter?

6. Catch them doing the right thing. Praise someone who has just handled a moment superlatively.

Recognize them in front of their peers. Get them to describe what they do in each moment.

7. Take notes of the things that get in the way of people being able to deliver dazzling moments. Rules, procedures and policies that are barriers to wow

Be the champion who goes back inside the organization and removes the grunge that prevents the front line from doing what they have to do to achieve the right moments.

8. Be spontaneous. Show up unannounced. Leave your entourage behind.

Make it about you, your folks and the moment.

9. Stream your experience to the rest of the organization. Publish what you learn for all to see and learn from.

10. Be consistent. Don’t let the flame diminish. Keep your fingerprint on the moment.

If you let it wane in your personal priority list, others will see, and conclude that the moment is simply another flavour-of-the-month.

Take personal ownership of the activities in your organization that are critical to serving your customers.

Do not delegate the stuff that will either make you win or lose.

A customer moment is in this bag of stuff.

It begs for your personal attention.

The City School organized an education symposium to highlight the importance of Early Years Education By: Khurram Zia Khan

In recent years, researchers have learned that the human brain develops the vast majority of its neurons, and is most receptive to learning between birth and three years of age. In fact, the intake of new information is critical to the formation of active neural pathways.
Children’s early experiences – the bonds they form with their parents and their first learning experiences – deeply affect their future physical, cognitive, emotional and social development.

Optimizing the early years of children’s lives is the best investment we can make as a society in ensuring their future success.
The emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development which determines the type of adult they will become. That is why understanding the need to invest in very young children is highly important to maximize their future well-being.

Globally the focus on early year’s education is rising.

In Pakistan many educational institutions are providing early years education but they have no knowledge and information about its benefits and as such they not only fail to convince parents but are also unable to impart quality early years education required to develop a child’s learning capacity. Poor or low quality education in early years can prove counterproductive and it may harm a child instead of benefiting him/her.

Institutions like The City School and a few others have a complete Early Years Education program in place and it is imperative that parents send their children to only those educational institutions that are aware of modern methods of imparting early years education.

The City School in order to the highlight importance of Early Years Education organized the nation’s first ever symposium on Early Years Education, entitled “Thought Leaders”. The symposium convened a platform for renowned experts and influencers to exchange best practices and cutting edge research in designing, developing and managing high performance learning environments for early childhood education. The Symposium drew on a combination of speaker sessions, panel discussions and workshops engaging local stakeholders, early years’ practitioners, schools and parents, to set the future direction for this critical area of education

During the symposium, children enthralled participants with their performances. Various crafts and other interesting art and craft specific items made by children were also displayed at the symposium other than the highly impressive role play sessions being managed by teachers.

A panel discussion titled ‘Developing 21st century skills’ also took place at the symposium. Eminent personalities were part of this panel discussion who shared their views on different aspects of education.
Mr Abbas Hussain while expressing his views said that teachers today should practice 4Cs of the 21st century which are collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Mr. Irfan Haider, another panelist while highlighting parent’s role said that parents especially mothers should remain involved in a child's upbringing as a teacher and the school is just concerned with the scholastic development of a child. Therefore a mother's love can't be replaced or substituted. Romana Hussain raised a critical point about the medium of education. She was of the view that the medium of education should be in a child's mother tongue at the early years if we want learning to take place. Saboohi Irtiza, GM Early Years Academics at The City School while expressing her views said that the contribution of the whole family in the development of the child is very important and that it’s not just limited to good schooling alone. Social constructivism is an essential strategy in developing 21st century skills in students. Zainab Mehmood, Salman Asif, Khaled Anum and Audrey D’ Souza also expressed their views.

The focus of the symposium was on preparing children for the 21st century, which is characterized by great technological advancements. Technology has advanced education and is playing a vital role in personalizing learning, encouraging collaboration, and preparing students for the future. The City School is investing heavily in integrating technology in the classroom, employing innovative teaching and learning methods to ensure that its students are well prepared for the 21st century. The Symposium was broadcast live on YouTube on TCS' Official YouTube Channel, another first for Pakistan.

The City School through this symposium helped remove misconceptions about early years’ education prevailing in our society. People usually believe that learning should start after children reach five years of age. The City School through its ‘Though Leader Symposium’ managed to remove this misconception and highlighted the fact that the best age for learning among children is from 18 month to 36 months.

The “Thought Leaders” symposium organized by The City School is an excellent initiative. Hope other educational institutions also organize similar activities in order to spread the message about the importance of early years education to the far flung areas of the country.
