Google today announced its annual Year in Pakistan Search, which looks back at 2016 through the collective eyes of searches on google.com.pk and offers a unique perspective on the year's major events, top newsmakers and hottest trends.


Google reveals the Internet’s spirit of the times through an exploration of the over one trillion search queries we receive each year. In addition to year end Searches, which highlights the top trends of 2016, we also have several tools that give insight into global, regional, past and present search trends. Google Search tools can never be used to identify individual users because we rely on anonymized, aggregated counts of how often certain search queries occur over time. Pakistani actress Armeena Rana Khan has added yet another feather to her cap for the year 2016 - she has been featured in the annual issue of coveted British publication Easter Eye, as one of the 50 Sexiest Asian Women.

The actress, who has had an extremely successful year with her debut movie Janaan be-coming a worldwide blockbuster and her television serial Bin Roye securing great Televi-sion Rating Points, rounds off a fulfilling 2016 with this acknowledgement.

Eastern Eye’s award-winning entertainment editor Asjad Nazir, who founded the list and puts it together annually said: “The biggest breakout star of Pakistani cinema this year was Armeena Rana Khan, who followed up a successful 2015 with an even bigger 2016. With her starring role in hit film Janaan, the strikingly beautiful actress helped Pakistani cinema cross new frontiers internationally and form strong connections with new audiences. One of the highest new entries in the list, she is a star who will shine even brighter in 2017.”


Armeena was also recently awarded the Women’s Empowerment Award at the Pakistan Achievements Awards held in UK. Her upcoming projects include television serial Rasm-e-Dunya, British feature length film The Real Target, British sci-fi film, The Achilles Protocol and Pakistani feature film Yalghaar.

Armeena Rana-Khan, better known by her stage name 'Armeena Khan' is a Canadian/Pakistani actress. After completing her initial schooling in Canada, Khan graduated with an Honours de-gree in Business from university in England. Thereafter she began a brief career in modeling and featured in print and television campaigns for various clothing and consumer brands including Nishat Linen and Faysal Bank. She went on to study Acting in London at Ealing and Pinewood studios before focusing on her acting career full time.

In 2012, Khan took on her first acting role in an Art house Indian film. This was followed by her first Pakistani role in the drama ‘Shabe-Arzoo Ka Alaam’ (ARY Digital). Khan went onto perform in two British short films, 'Writhe' and ‘Stranger Within Me’. These were selected for the 2013 and 2014 Cannes film festivals respectively (short film corner).

In 2014, Khan’s second Pakistani drama "Mohabbat Ab Nahi Hogi" proved to be a commercial success and firmly established Khan in the Pakistani Television industry.

In 2015, Khan starred in two successful dramas, 'Ishq Parast’ (ARY Digital) and ‘Karb’ (HUM TV). 2015 asaw the International release of Khan’s first Pakistani feature film ‘Bin Roye.' Addi-tionally Khan is also the 2015 celebrity face of ‘Sprite’ in South Asia.

‘Janaan” which was the first sympathetic portrayal of Pushtoon culture, released in 2016 and became one of the biggest blockbusters of Pakistani cinema. Khan is currently working on one major feature film, 'Yalghaar', slated to be the most expensive Pakistani film to date.

The story line revolves around three friends who find themselves at odds with each other after successfully reclaiming their town from Mangu the villian. 3 Bahadur gives children local heroes to resonate with By Khurram Zia Khan

3 Bahadur “The revenge of Baba Balam “released recently is the sequel of 3 Bahadur which was released in May 2015. This movie is an excellent attempt to place Pakistan among the countries that made animated movies.
3 Bahadur is a story of three super kids who were given super powers to deal with the evil.

These children live in a middle class locality known as Roshan Nagar and are always on the lookout for an opportunity to help their people or to save them from criminals.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, the director of the movie has been upfront in giving the children of Pakistan their very own local heroes in the form of Kamil, Amna and Sadi. These are the characters that the young children can look up for inspiration.

Cinematography of ‘3 Bahadur “The revenge of Baba Balam’ is of excellent quality and can easily compete with any international animated movie.

Story of this movie has local heroes which everyone in Pakistan can easily relate to. Although it appears to be a very common story but it was presented in such a way that viewers remained engrossed from the beginning till the end.

In the movie, some common political slogans of Pakistan were used to create humor and they matched with the scenario so well that they filled the cinema hall with laughter.
This movie gives some beautiful messages for the society. First and foremost is unity. It further highlights that as long as our super kids are united, they dominate evil and are seen winning the war but once they are seen going their separate ways, the evil starts taking control over them. I hope that young generations of Pakistan always remember this basic principal that ‘Unity is strength’ and make it a central part of their life forever.
Another important message conveyed through this movie is not to misuse your power. This is an important message for our society where people misuse their power and authority with impunity and create imbalance in the society. Our super kids from 3 Bahadur, through their performance in schools’ annual sports day highlight that spirit of participation is more important than winning or loosing
In a society where intolerance is rampant, Kamil by giving food to one of his foe Pateeli  sets a very good example that helps your foe also in times of need  as you never know that your good gesture may turn your foe into your friend and he may come to your help in time of need.

It is good that the creators of 3 Bahadur learned from their first experience and curtail sponsor messages to bare minimum in their second venture

I think sound is the one area which was a little weak. The overall sound quality is good but at times the sound is too loud which is not good for children who are the main audience of this movie although this movie is strong enough to give joy and entertainment to people of all ages.

Voices of Fahad Mustafa, Behroze Subzwari, Sarwat Gillani, Ahmad Ali Butt, Khalid Malik, Zeba Shahnaz, Zuhab Khan, Arisha Razi Khan, Hanzala Shahid, Ali Gul Pir, Mustafa Changezi, Badar Qureshi and Bassam Shazzali are used for different characters of this movie and each voice  appropriately suitedthe character for which it is used.

Watching 3 Bahadur gives a positive energy to viewers. In my view, a movie is liked by  the audience when they come out of the cinema hall singing that movie’s song or having positive discussion about the movie and while coming out from the cinema I heard many children singing and chanting songs of the movie.

During a conversation with Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, she revealed that they will not be making the third part of 3 Bahadur soon, but somehow I was engulfed by this movie and am anxiously waiting for another part of 3 Bahadur to see how the three super kids fight and thwart the next level of challenges which Baba Balaam bring for them.

I recommend all parents and guardians to go to the cinema with their children to watch this entertaining movie


Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award

The 42-year-old captain of Pakistan test team,Misbah-Ul-Haq was adjudged the winner of ‘ICC Spirit Of Cricket Award’ for inspiring his side to play the game in its true spirit and at the same time lifting the Pakistan cricket team from precarious situations to number-one on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings.Remarkably, this was achieved without playing any Test matches in his home country.
Misbah is the first Pakistan player to win the award which previously was won by MS Dhoni (2011), Daniel Vettori (2012), Mahela Jayawardena (2013), Katherine Brunt (2014) and Brendon McCullum (2015). New Zealand also won this award in 2004, 2009 and 2010, England in 2005 and 2006, and Sri Lanka in 2007 and 2008.

Expressing his views on this achievement, Misbah said: “I feel honoured and humbled to have won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award. To lift the Test mace earlier this year and now this in the twilight of my career, is a message for every athlete that age is not a barrier as long as the sportsperson maintains highest fitness levels and continues to perform up to international standards.

“As a team, we have focused on playing within the rich traditions of the sport with a positive mindset and approach so that we can entertain the spectators and fans, and at the same time, challenge the oppositions. I am glad that this has been noticed and recognised by the game’s governing body.”

The song is a cover of the ghazal originally by Ustad Ibrahim Zauq, considered as a leading light among Urdu poets in the subcontinent.

Layee Hayat is considered to be one of the best works by Ustad Ibrahim Zauq and has been performed by several legendary singers over the years, most prominently by KL Saigal. This is the first time the ghazal has been covered in the blues/jazz genre. The inspiration behind the poetry has been the fact that no one has any control over one’s actions and destiny. It is a direct strike against the arrogance and condescension of the human mind, lying bare in essence, the inability of the human being to do or accomplish anything.

Speaking about why Blue Sax chose to record this cover, the band’s founder Talha Ali Kushava says,“Layee Hayat has been a part of my musical journey since the beginning. I used to hear KLSaigal’s version from my Uncle’s collection, which can also be heard in the beginning of our version. Saman Tariq Malik is the 2017 Rhodes Scholar Elect From Pakistan

Saman Tariq Malik, has won the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Each year the Rhodes Trust awards this scholarship to one person from each member country to study at Oxford. Saman is the Rhodes Scholar-elect from Pakistan for the year 2017. She competed for this scholarship against an estimated 4000 applications from Pakistan this year. The result was announced on the 26th of November 2016 by Mr. Babar Sattar, the National Secretary for Pakistan Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee, following the interviews held in Islamabad. 

Saman Tariq Malik, has won the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship
Saman Tariq Malik did her major in English from Lahore University of Management Sciences and also did her minor in History during her time in LUMS. She represents the first student from Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences to have won the Rhodes. She was consistently on the Dean’s Honor List and was also the winner of the prestigious Raazia Waseem Award for the Best Senior Project in English at LUMS.

Saman’s research thesis was the culmination of her long term interest in literary histories of South Asia. Though Saman officially majored in English, her work is essentially interdisciplinary in nature, traversing the disciplines of history and comparative literature. Her areas of interest include the study of Urdu literary traditions, vernacular print cultures, narratives of exile, gender and reform discourses, the Anglophone novel, world literatures and Orientalism. Ostensibly, an examination of a lesser known Urdu translation of Kalidasa’s ubiquitous Sakuntala by Akhtar Husain Raipuri, Saman’s Senior Project diverged into a study of intellectual after lives of literary texts in South Asia’s context. Her project, “Many Afterlives: The Urdu Translation of Sakuntala and the Politics of Authenticity,” was supervised by Dr. Ali Raza (Assistant Professor, History) and Dr. Maryam Wasif Khan (Assistant Professor, English and Comparative Literature) and is now being revised for publication. 

During her undergraduate academic career, Saman was involved in a range of extracurricular and service activities. In 2016, she was selected as a research assistant for Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi’s project on the Archives of Pakistan. She assisted in organizing the first comprehensive workshop for archivists across the country taught by Dr Kevin Greenbank from the Cambridge University. Saman was also selected among nine students for a seminar workshop on the ‘The Ontology of a Witness of War’ conducted by Dr. Manan Ahmad from Columbia University. As a research assistant for a remembrance-based digital archive project she assisted Dr. Ali Raza and continues to work on it after graduation. Alongside, she is also assisting Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi (Assistant Professor, History) in his historical inquiry on national culture of Pakistan. She is a senior teaching assistant for courses at LUMS under the supervision of Dr. Maryam Wasif Khan who is preparing her for teaching. Recently, Saman delivered a lecture in Dr. Khan’s Western Canon class: “Beyond the Western Canon: Sexuality, Sappho and Ismet Chugtai.” Saman is a contributing writer for the acclaimed online magazine, Tanqeed. She is an artist with a special interest in contemporary Pakistani political art.

Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Sohail Naqvi extended his felicitations while commenting that “Saman took full advantage of the open, interdisciplinary environment of LUMS, working with the resident and visiting international faculty to produce her insightful research thesis focusing on the literary histories of South Asia. She brings honour to herself, the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and LUMS. We are all truly proud of what Saman has achieved.

Saman aims to further her interest in South Asian literary cultures and digital archiving through an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies at Oxford. According to Dean of the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Ali Khan, “Saman’s proposed research on intellectual and cultural histories of South Asia is likely to yield tremendous and much needed insights into our history. We need excellent historians in Pakistan and Saman is poised to join the ranks of the very best”.

Upon receiving the scholarship Saman thanked her faculty at MGSHSS saying, “I am deeply honored to be awarded the Rhodes Scholarship 2017. It is a dream come true. I want to thank Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi, Dr. Ali Raza, Dr. Kamal Munir, and Dr. Maryam Wasif Khan for their constant guidance, love and support. I look forward to my time at Oxford, contributing through my work to the diversity that comprises the Rhodes Scholar community’.

Or a guest for the weekend?

A dinner conveys a certain amount of value being derived but a weekend is at another level completely.

And of course if you wouldn't even have a conversation with your product, that's another story.




The amount of personal time and money you are prepared to invest on anything depends on the amount of value you receive.

How is value described?  

On one level, value is derived by how a product FUNCTIONS. Does it consistently work as promised? Does it deliver to specifications? 

On another level, value is created by how a product makes the buyer FEEL when it is used or consumed.

Is it special in some way? Is it different in a way that makes it remarkable and memorable?

Does the consumer mention and recommend it to their friends?

Which is more important: value derived from function or value created from feelings?

Which is the better metric of product performance? Which has the greater strategic implications?

Most organizations believe a product is performing well if it consistently does what it's supposed to do. 

If product promises, or specifications, are delivered 24X7X365. Dependability and consistency are the primary key success factors.

The issue is that performance doesn't go far enough today; customers expect products that work as the product manual promises. And when they do, they are at best SATISFIED .

No long term loyalty is created and the customer will leave for a better "mouse trap" when it shows up. And when products perform below expectations, customers are quick to voice their negative feedback to as many people as they can.

On the other hand, when the product AMAZES, when memories are created and magic happens, customers buy-in at a completely different level.

They turn into maniacal fans who go out of their way to support the supplying organization in every way.

They "spread their word" to others .They talk up how great the company is and strongly recommend it to others. 

By all means ensure your product performs consistently, but don't stop until you wrap it up with an AMAZE layer that delights your customer.

It's AMAZE that creates long term value for the organization.

‘Parwaaz Hay Junoon’ is the directorial debut of award-winning director Haseeb Hasan and has been penned by Farhat Ishtiaq of Humsfar, Diyar-e-Dil & Udaari fame.

The film is being produced in collaboration with Pakistan Airforce and will be focusing on highlighting the stories from real life, with real-life airforce pilots & personalities to play part in the film along with the lead cast.

We live in a product flogging world.



Products are pushed at us. Technology rains down on us through mass communications. 

What businesses supply (as opposed to what we want) is jammed down our throats with the hope that we will bite-and-buy what they offer.

Today more than ever, however, purchase decisions are motivated by what people want and desire, not need. 

People buy on the basis of what they yearn for and ache for; to achieve happiness in a world with pressure and stress on their lives.

Product flogging is intrusive and completely out of sync with this reality, and is a recipe to fail.

Happiness is driven by what we experience rather than what we consume in material goods. Fond memories of a family vacation are long-lasting. The new car is fun for a while but soon feels no different than just the one we just traded in.

This is a game-changer for product floggers. Rather than push features, technology and price, the challenge is to create broad-based appeals to the full spectrum of feelings that an individual has. 

The marketer's objective in this sense is to elicit a positive emotional response from the customer, rather than satisfy a consumer need.

"When people were asked to recall their most significant material purchase and their most significant experiential purchase over the past five years, they reported the experiential purchase brought them more joy and enduring satisfaction, and it was clearly 'money well spent' compared with the material purchase," wrote Thomas Gilovich, Professor of Psychology, Cornell University in Determinants of Happiness.

Furthermore, experiences create more happiness than material goods because they are a personal expression of what we desire. They belong to us alone and no one else.

Memo to marketers: forsake your flogging ways and start creating personal experiences for your customers. 

Keep Maya Angelou's words in mind: "... people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

The payback is long-term customer loyalty; the better they feel, the longer they stay.

These 3 steps will get you started. 

1. Establish the EXPERIENCE CREATOR POSITION in marketing to augment in the standard product management role.
These are the experience packagers; the folks that integrate, brand and price the value elements necessary to deliver the complete experience that customers covet.

2. Include FEELINGS as a key element of marketing research. What experience would make someone happy, special and fulfilled? What does the person crave?

3. Measure the EMOTIONAL ELEMENT of your experience packages; "How did it make you feel?" not just "Did it meet your needs?"
